SWAT Training Workshop - 23 to 27 July (Stellenbosch University, South Africa)

You are invited to a one-week Soil & Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) workshop, based on the well-known hydrological model, which will be held at Stellenbosch University from Monday 23 July to Friday 27 July. It is of value to soil scientists, resource managers, ecologists, environmental specialists, etc. 

The workshop is hosted by the Stellenbosch University Water Institute and the Department of Soil Science, also at Stellenbosch University as a direct outflow from:

1.       Water Research Commission Project “Implementation of salinity and water management tools for the Berg and Breede catchments in the Western Cape”.

2.       The EAU4Food research program.

More about our presenter, Dr Tracy Baker:

Dr. Tracy Baker has a PhD in Rangeland Ecology and Watershed Management from the University of Wyoming (2008) and is currently an Assistant Professor in Environmental Science at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, as well as an Associated Research Scientist of the Norman Borlaug Institute for International Agriculture.

Her previous roles were as an Extension Specialist with Texas A&M University and Postdoctoral Fellow in Hydrology with the International Water Management Institute in Ghana.

Dr. Baker's research focus is on land use change and the spatial and temporal analysis of landscapes and watersheds. She is particularly interested in how people manage multiple competing interests such as conservation, agriculture, economic development, and ecological services in the absence of clearly defined or enforced legal mechanisms, and has been using the SWAT model on related projects for the past decade throughout Africa.

She has worked in the Lake Nakuru, Nile, and Volta basins and is currently carrying out research in South Africa and South Sudan.

Venue

Will take place at the Stellenbosch University. Specific venue will be announced in due course, depending of number of participants.

Facilities

Computer facilities at Stellenbosch University will be used. However, you are welcome to bring your laptop if you have ARCMAP installed on it.

Cost: R1000.00 per person (on a no profit basis), which will include tea time refreshments twice a day, as well as lunch.

Preliminary Programme:

Monday 23 July 09h00 to 16h00:  Introduction to SWAT and setting up the model.

Tuesday 24 and Wednesday 25 July 09h00 to 16h00: Data preparation, model calibration and sensitivity analysis

Thursday 26 July 09h00 to 16h00:  SWAT-APEX introduction and application.

Friday 27 July 09h00 to 15h00: Tutorial

We can accommodate only 25 participants. We will accommodate people on a first come basis. Preference will also be given to people that aim to attend the full week.
