Latin America explores IWRM Indicators for River Basin Organisations.
By Cap-Net - feb 2009
A-WETnet is initiating a programme to facilitate the use of indicators
for Integrated Water Resources Management (WRM) at the river basin
level this year. The objective is to understand water management on the
ground and respond to River Basin Organisation’s (RBOs) specific
capacity building needs. This regional initiative will invite LA-WETnet
members working closely with RBOs with an explicit IWRM goal to
participate.
Building on the significant recognition of IWRM in
Latin America, RBOs are seen as key drivers towards sustainable water
resources management. Located close to the ground they offer
decentralised water resources management opportunities, but there is
little understanding of the issues and RBOs’ capacity to implement
IWRM.
The expected outcomes are to: Develop a RBO capacity
building support programme towards IWRM implementation; Introducing a
set of minimum indicators for RBOs and strengthen their IWRM awareness
and knowledge; Compile performance information from various RBOs in the
region and use this comparative information to identify and share
lessons learned, best practices, and capacity gaps. The international
network will benefit from feedback on the RBO indicators and
recommendations on the existing indicators.
